Edmonton Parents of Attacked Teens Want
Increased Transit Security
Edmonton – The parents of a group of teenagers attacked on the LRT New Year’s Eve met with Mayor Bill Smith Friday, asking that he beef up security on the city’s transit system.
And Smith pledges to find the money if transit needs more funds to make the system safer.
The five white teens – four girls and a boy – were riding home after the fireworks when they were swarmed by about 30 native youth in what police are calling a racially motivated attack. A police spokesman said the native youths said ‘we’re going to get the white kids’ before they attacked.
“They certainly talked about security cameras. They talked about having security people in the docks,” Smith said of the concerns of the parents, who declined to speak to the media. “These are things I also raised. I am not in a position to comment on them, because I am not sure exactly how the cameras work and when they are turned on, so I need to be brought up to date.”
Smith says transit security is being reviewed.
“We have about 45 million rides a year and when you compare it to the incidents, it doesn’t look like much,” Smith says. “But even one is not acceptable.”
The larger group of aboriginal youths fled when the crowded train pulled into Belvedere station. The boy, who was beaten, had to be taken to hospital.
